New 60M Control Tower At Manchester Airport

Project: Manchester Airport Control Tower
Main Contractor: Morgan Sindall plc
Location: Manchester, North West, UK

The Task

From the original control tower at the airport, the controllers could see for miles, yet part of the reason for closure was the things that couldn’t be seen – they had great views of Jodrell Bank, however the end of Runway 2 wasn’t visible without the help of CCTV. The team also ditched pen and paper planning for digital technology.

The Solution

The new tower is 60m (197ft) high and was built using a method of continuous concrete pouring over 9 days, using some 600 cubic metres of concrete and 65 tons of reinforced steelwork. The completed tower replaces the existing 40-year-old tower and dominates Manchester airport’s skyline, providing a 360-degree panoramic view of the entire airport.
